Hertford Methodist Church seeks to serve God in Hertford and the wider world through love and fellowship
This is a nation-wide scheme, originating in the Church of England and now embraced by Methodism, including our Circuit. An ‘Eco Team’ is working through actions suggested by the ninety or so prompts in the A Rocha questionnaire to decide which actions we can implement straightaway. Many have already been achieved.
The prompts fall under five headings:
We have installed air source heat pumps, solar panels and a battery and have removed the gas supply from the premises. Our fluorescent lighting bulbs have been replaced by LEDs.
In the future, we hope to move to fully-renewably sourced electricity from the grid so that our energy supply is truly ‘net zero’. Since we shall continue to run a thriving café, our food and drink supply is more difficult to ‘decarbonize’.
A ‘climate resilience plan’ has been drawn up, anticipating more frequent and arduous heat-waves.
Our small church garden has been fitted with bird boxes and a bug hotel. Local litter picks are being supported and a campaign to ensure that our waste is properly sorted has begun. Participation in local wild-life preservation initiatives are being planned.
Contact has been made with some of the other Churches in Hertford with a view to having joint action on eco activities through Hertford Churches Together.
Support for the Hertford Town Council Eco Group has also been promised.
Through the Hertford Climate and Nature Group, a meeting has taken place with the local MP to promote a current Private Member’s Bill, and future meetings have been agreed.
We do not seek to dictate to our congregation what their choices should be, but to try to ensure that they are well informed of the global consequences of our combined actions through articles and talks.
Thanks for the creation is of course embedded in our services. However, our worship leaders are being reminded that prayers for action to mitigate climate change are also required, and that our young people must be made aware of our concern.
